  •   2,400,000 hectolitres of wine produced in 2012
60% of the wine produced in Piedmont is earmarked for foreign markets:   66 million bottles of Asti (81% of total production) 20 million bottles of Moscato d’Asti (78% of total production) 8 million bottles of Barolo (65% of total production) 2.5 million bottles of Barbaresco (55% of total production) 10 million bottles of Barbera d’Asti (40% of total production) 8 million bottles of Gavi (70% of total production) 1.5 million bottles of Brachetto d’Acqui (30% of total production)   Info: www.piemonte-landofperfection.org
Italian wine continues to perform well, especially on overseas markets. Export figures show in fact that, once more in 2012, though sales volumes fell, value maintained a positive trend, reaching a total of 4.7 billion euros, 6% up on 2011. About 60% of Piedmontese wines end up on overseas markets and in 2012 their value totalled 1.4 billion euros. Gracing the world’s tables were 66 million bottles of Asti, 20 million of Moscato d’Asti, 8 million of Barolo, 2.5 million of Barbaresco, 10 million of Barbera d’Asti, 8 million of Gavi and 1.5 million of Brachetto d’Acqui. Conscious of its important role, Piedmont will again be present at Vinitaly in Verona, now in its 47th year, the most important fair in the sector with 4,300 exhibitors, 150,000 members of the trade from 114 countries and 2,500 journalists from 140 countries. 600 Piedmontese exhibitors (about 14% of the total) will be present in Pavilion 9, while the Asti Consortium will be found in Pavilion 7b. The majority of Piedmontese exhibitors will be small and medium wineries, though about 20 cooperative wine cellars, five producers’ associations, eight protection consortia and numerous bodies and institutions, such as the various Provincial Authorities, will also be in attendance. This strong participation consolidates collaboration between the Piedmont Regional Authority, the Piedmont branch of Unioncamere, the national union of chambers of commerce, and the Piemonte Land of Perfection consortium, thanks to which about 200 exhibitors will occupy a collective area in Pavilion 9 Piedmont. The pavilion will comprise a reception and tasting area and a meeting space which will be given over to a programme of events presenting novelties, initiatives and projects in the Piedmontese wine world. This year the graphics have been designed by two young artists — Hilario Isola and Matteo Norzi — as a foretaste of a forthcoming collaboration with Artissima, the Turin international art fair. Another novelty this year will be Ristorante Piedmont in Vinitaly’s Citadel of Gastronomy (Area H). The restaurant will be supervised by the Michelin-starred chef Davide Palluda, who will serve traditional Piedmontese dishes with DOCG wines. Last but not least, the Cangrande medal for Piedmont will be awarded to Barolo maker Domenico Clerico of Monforte d’Alba.

The Piedmont team is getting ready for Prowein, the wine show to be staged in Düsseldorf from March 24 to 26. The trip will be organised by the Piemonte Land of Perfection super consortium, formed to harmonise the promotional strategies of the region’s main wine consortia (Asti, Barolo Barbaresco Alba Langhe e Roero, Brachetto d’Acqui, Barbera Vini d’Asti e del Monferrato, Gavi) and producers’ associations (Produttori Moscato and Vignaioli Piemontesi). Sixty-one wineries will take part in the trip to recreate a mini Piedmont in the 300 square-metre Italy Pavilion (PAD 3 /AREA C11 B11 C06). “The idea to work as a team and turn out as one under the Piedmont flag is convincing and effective,” says Andrea Ferrero, president of Piemonte Land of Perfection. “Proof of the fact is the number of companies joining in — 61 at Prowein. They have understood that you can’t go round the world selling wine in pell-mell fashion, that we have to join the forces of Piedmontese viticulture to form a common front against the fierce competition of the world’s great wine regions on international markets. We set out on this road in 2012 and it’s yielding its first results. We’re continuing to believe in it this year too, convinced it’s the right one for the future of Piedmont.” Italy is Germany’s main wine supplier, providing 36% of total volume, followed by France with 27%. Piedmont alone exports about 60% of its wine. Piedmont in numbers

300 journalists buyers and restaurateurs from as far afield as Florida, Texas and California came to taste Piemonte wines at Tribeca 360

The event to promote the wines of Piemonte organised by Piemonte Land of Perfection (set up to harmonise the promotional strategies of the consortiums for the protection of individual products (Consorzi di Tutela), Moscato Producers and Piedmontese Vine Dressers) aroused curiosity in New York, but also in Florida, Texas, Massachusetts and California. More than 300 journalists, restaurateurs and buyers came to drink a toast at Tribeca 360, on the eleventh floor of an historic building that offers views of the Big Apple.

To welcome the best wines of Piedmont:  Barolo, Barbaresco, Barbera, Dogliani, Moscato d’Asti, Brachetto d’Acqui and Asti Spumante wines to taste.

Notwithstanding the latest figures published by the Italian Wine and Food Institute, which show that Italian exports of wine to the US fell by 5.6 percent in volume (almost 800 thousand hectolitres) and by 3.8 percent in value (390 million dollars) in the first four months of 2012, there was an atmosphere of effervescent good humour among the delegation from Piemonte. This was confirmed by Andrea Ferrero, chairman of Piemonte Land of Perfection: “Following the crisis, we are fully committed to renewing our efforts and must not forget that the USA is still Italy’s third-largest export market for wine”. In 2011 the US imported 2.5 million hectolitres of Italian wine, 13 percent more than in 2010, for a value of around $ 1,250,000,000. During the tastings, journalists and importers demonstrated interest and curiosity about the native grape varieties of Piemonte, “our strength in an increasingly competitive market”, said Mr. Ferrero, leading the mission with the chairmen of the Brachetto and Asti Consortiums, Paolo Ricagno and Gianni Marzagalli. Piemonte will face up to the world’s wine-producing giants (such as Australia, Chile and Argentina) by offering products of quality. A challenge in which it has, to some extent, already succeeded: “I have given many talks about wine, in many parts of the world: London, Sofia, Hong Kong, Chicago, but have never had to answer so many questions about wine, grapes and denominations”, admitted master of wine Christy Canterbury, who led the tasting seminars. The event was also attended by wine reporters from leading trade magazines (Wine Enthusiast, Beverage Media, Wine Spectator, iSanté Magazine and Sommelier News). The Piemonte day ended at the “I tre Merli” restaurant, with dishes prepared by chef Maurizio Marfoglia to accompany a journey through the terroir of Piemonte wines. Some came back home, others flew on to California: today, 20th July, Asti and Moscato are the sparkling protagonists at Laguna Beach. A toast from coast to coast, with the promise of meeting again soon in the States.

Another important stage in the challenge to promote wines from Piemonte on Wednesday 18th July at Three Sixty in New York

New York loves Piemonte. And vice versa. A reciprocal love that will be renewed during an important event dedicated to wines from Piemonte to be held on Wednesday, 18th July at Three Sixty in Tribeca. The event is exclusively for buyers, restaurateurs and journalists. The aim of the initiative, hosted by Piemonte Land of Perfection, is to use New York to re-launch the challenge to promote wines from Piemonte in the United States. The event marks the debut in the USA for this vast consortium that brings together the main consortiums for the protection of individual products (Consorzi di Tutela) and producers’ associations.

“For the first time, the Piemonte team will act as one, albeit with a diversified offering”, explained Andrea Ferrero, chairman of Piemonte Land of Perfection. “We recently returned from an important mission to China, where our wines were the protagonists in Hong Kong, Shanghai and Canton. While Asia is a new market for us, people in the United States have known, appreciated and consumed our wines for years”.

The event will start with a Grand Tasting of a selection of the best Piemonte wines: the sweet Asti Spumante, the more structured Barbera and the great wines of the Langhe region, Barolo and Barbaresco, that can stand comparison with the best French wines. In recent years there has been a real “Moscato mania” in the States, where sales of Moscato d’Asti soared. Brachetto d´Acqui and other minor DOC and DOCG wines also enjoyed a surge in popularity as a result. Master of Wine Christy Canterbury will then lead a seminar-journey to discover the “Big Reds and Aromatic Wines”. In the evening the “I Tre Merli” restaurant will be the venue for a gala dinner: dishes prepared by chef Maurizio Marfoglia will be accompanied bythe Piemonte wines taking part in the event. According to Mr. Ferrero, “New York is the soul of the United States. This city has welcomed many generations of people from Piemonte, who brought with them the food and wine culture of their land. In the restaurant industry, our products, wines and recipes have won the hearts and palates of the Americans”. He concluded by saying, “We will be celebrating Piemonte not only as a land of great wines, but also as the home to great men and women who cultivate the vines and take care of the land. A region that is proud of its native grape varieties and where quality is a tradition. What is Piemonte Land of Perfection “Piemonte Land of Perfection” was established on 29 July 2011 with the support of the Regional Council of Piemonte to draw attention to the region’s unique and exceptional heritage and terroir. This “Consortium of consortiums” brings together the main consortiums for the protection of individual products (Consorzi di Tutela) and producers’ associations. It works to promote the region’s wines and local products, especially abroad. The consortium’s seven founding members are the Consortium for the Protection of Asti, the Consortium for the Protection of Barolo, Barbaresco, Alba, Langhe and Roero, the Consortium for the Protection of Brachetto d’Acqui, the Consortium for the Protection of Asti and Monferrato Barbera Wines, the Association of Moscato d’Asti Producers, the Association of Piedmontese Vine Dressers and the Canelli Wine Growers’ Cooperative.
